Depending on your job or school, you may be required to have a drug test. South Pointe Healthcare offers drug screening that is fast and reliable.

Why Do I Need A Drug Test?

There are many situations when a drug test is required. Some of these situations include:

  • It can be required as part of a new or existing job.
  • College and professional athletes may need to be tested for performance-enhancing substances.
  • Drug testing may be part of a criminal or motor vehicle accident investigation.
  • Drug screening may be required as part of a court case.
  • If you’ve been prescribed an opioid for chronic pain, your health care provider may order a test to make sure you are taking the right amount of your medicine.

Depending on what is required for your drug test, a drug screening can include, but is not limited to:

  • Marijuana
  • Opioids, such as heroin, codeine, oxycodone, morphine, hydrocodone, and fentanyl
  • Amphetamines, including methamphetamine
  • Cocaine
  • Steroids
  • Barbiturates, such as phenobarbital and secobarbital
  • Phencyclidine (PCP)
  • Benzodiazepines, or benzos

Why Employers Should Require A Drug Test

If you’re a business owner, you may want to consider the positive impacts of drug screening your employees.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) reports that employees who use drugs are:

  • 2.5 times more likely to be absent for 8 or more days each year (compared to workers who do not use drugs)
  • 3.6 times more likely to be involved in an accident at work
  • 5 times more likely to file a workers’ compensation claim

According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, when compared with employees who do not use substances, employees who use substances are more likely to:

  • Change jobs frequently
  • Be late to or absent from work
  • Be less productive
  • Be involved in a workplace accident and potentially harm others
  • File a workers’ compensation claim

Substance abuse, including drugs and alcohol, costs billions of dollars in lost productivity and increased healthcare spending each year, according to Quest Diagnostics.

Employers who have implemented drug-free workplace programs have positively reported as reported on Drugabuse.gov:

  • Improvements in morale
  • Improvements in productivity
  • Decreases in absenteeism, accidents, downtime, turnover, and theft
  • Employers with long-standing programs report better health status among employees and family members and reduced healthcare costs
  • Some organizations with drug-free workplace programs qualify for incentives, such as decreased costs associated with short- and long-term disability and workers’ compensation

South Pointe Healthcare can offer affordable, fast, and reliable drug screening for employers.

How To Prepare For A Drug Test

Before your test, talk to your health care provider if you are taking prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, or supplements that could impact the test.

According to WebMD, there are additional factors that could impact a drug screening, including second-hand marijuana smoke, poppy seeds, mouthwash (for alcohol tests), CBD oil, and some teas.
